Phnom Kulen is the mountain where Jayavarman II declared a unified and independent Khmer Empire in 802AD. The Mountain sits some 50km from Siem Reap and is home to a number of minor ruins, waterfalls and an active Pagoda. This hike explores the foothills of the mountain and journeys up to a monks retreat where hikers are rewarded with a cave carving of a reclining budda and views over the valleys below.

The hike is a steady climb and requires reasonable fitness and agility. You are hiking for approximately1.2 hours up the mountain and returning via the same path. While this is not a difficult hike, especially for those with trekking experience, pathways are narrow with loose gravel and rocks that need negoiating in some places. Your efforts are rewarded with a beautiful and tranquil place.

Following the hike we journey on to the jungle temple of Beng Melea. This temple is one of Angkors most mysterious and affords visitors with the opportunity to truly explore the temple. Climb up, over and through the ruins of this incredible site,

7.00am	We depart early from Siem Reap to take advantage of the cooler part of the day. Kulen Mountain sits 50km from Siem Reap and our starting point is appoximately 70km from Siem Reap, on the journey out you will pass through local villages and beautiful contryside. The trip takes over one hour.
8.00am	The hike commences at the very base of Kulen Mountain the first section winds its way to a mountain track. Once we reach the mountain track the path narrows to allow one hiker at a time. Depending on the time of year large trees are flowering filling the air at the base of the mountain with their perfume. As the climb continues you will see banana plantations amongst the rocky outcrops and local villagers may pass you as they carry their baskets of wares up the mountain to sell. Your guide will point out trees and plants along the way and short stops make the climbing easier. As the elevation rises there are great views out over the countryside.
10.00am	At around 10am we reach our destination, a small monks retreat, with lovely views over the valley. It is here that we will stop and enjoy morning tea before exploring the area and visiting the carving of the reclining Buddha. You are welcome to spend time here either relaxing and soaking up the views, or meditating and enjoying this very special place. When you are ready we commence the downward climb back to meet our driver.
12.00pm	We head across by vehicle to Beng Melea temple where we enjoy a picnic lunch before exploring this increedible temples site.
4.00pm	Return to Siem Reap.
